Youth take action regarding recycling in Columbia area
(COLUMBIA, MO) - The phrase "Friday the 13th" brings to mind
horror films and bad luck to most people. However, to some active
Columbia youth, it means car washes and recycling.
On Friday, Aug. 13, Youth In Action, a youth volunteer program
geared at young people 12 -15 years, will hold a car wash to benefit
local recycling efforts. The car wash will be held from 3-7 p.m. at
Patricia's Foods, 900 Keene St.
Donations of $5 are requested and will be used to purchase
recycling bins for special events in and around the city of Columbia,
such as art fairs and little league games.
In addition to the car wash, Youth In Action has taken steps to
educate the community regarding the importance of recycling in other
ways such as decorating recycling bins and facilitating an informational
game at Lunch in the Park. The group will also distribute educational
door hangers at apartment complexes through the city.
Many thanks to Patricia's Foods, Merry Maids and members of
the Public Works staff for their donations to help make this a complete
success.
The Youth in Action Program offers a number of organized and
supervised volunteer activities throughout the summer for youth ages of
12 -15 years. Participants have done everything from working at the food
bank, to painting sets for Theater Reaching Young People and Schools, to
cleaning up litter on the Adopt-a-Spot , to washing dogs for Columbia
Second Chance, while learning the importance of civic duty and having
fun.
For more information regarding Youth in Action or the car wash
to benefit local recycling efforts, contact Anne Meysenburg at 999-0474
or email OVSINTER at GoColumbiaMo.com.
