Volunteers from MU's 'Step Forward Day' scheduled to work on
Broadfield medians this Saturday
(COLUMBIA, MO) - This Saturday, volunteers with the University
of Missouri's "Step Forward Day" will work on two median islands
in Broadfield Road, just south of Broadway in west Columbia. The median
islands were constructed by the city of Columbia earlier this year as a
means of traffic calming. Volunteers will weed and mulch the beds and
begin planting flowers.
The two beds are new additions to the city of Columbia's
Adopt-A-Spot Beautification Program that includes 60 areas at
intersections, in medians and along streets throughout Columbia.
Volunteers agree to maintain the beds by weeding, mulching and watering
the plants for a period of four years.
"Step Forward Day" volunteers will work in the beds from 10
a.m. until 1 p.m. This is the second year for the volunteer event that
allows incoming freshman and the University of Missouri-Columbia to
provide service and learn more about the community.
The city's Office of Volunteer Services invites others in the
community to assist in Saturday's project. Additional volunteers are
welcome to work alongside the MU students.
One of the two beds in Broadfield Road has a pending adopter;
the other bed is available for an individual, group or business to
adopt. Anyone interested in the Adopt-A-Spot Program or in Saturday's
project should call the Office of Volunteer Services at 874-7499.
