Mid-Missouri Mavericks to recognize Youth In Action

(COLUMBIA, MO) - On Aug. 19, the Mid-Missouri Mavericks will
recognize the volunteer efforts of Youth In Action (YIA), a volunteer
program geared at young people between the ages of 12-15 years.
Volunteers in YIA have contributed 630 hours to 14 agencies and
organizations throughout the summer. Two of the youth, Dylan Conn and
Brittney Bias, contributed over 80 hours a piece of volunteer labor for
the summer.
Some of the projects included: washing dogs as a fund-raiser for
Columbia Second Chance, packaging food for the Central Missouri Humane
Society, bussing tables for Voluntary Action Center's Christmas in
July, working at the track and field events of the Show-Me State Games,
painting Cinderella sets for Theater Reaching Young People and Schools,
helping kids make craft projects at Art in the Park, and much more.
There were a total of 32 volunteer opportunities for the youth to choose
from this summer.
"Volunteers are a valuable asset to our local government,"
said Leigh Nutter, volunteer coordinator with the Office of Volunteer
Services. "By sharing their time, they make the city of Columbia more
efficient. These same volunteers learn new skills, make new friends and
learn more about how our local government functions."
Beyond these activities, the youth also chose to focus on
recycling through several events geared towards fund-raising and
education. Some of these events included raising money for portable
recycling bins for special events throughout the community, educating
kids at Lunch in the Park on the need to recycle, hanging information
door hangers at various apartment complexes throughout Columbia and
decorating recycling bins.
To wrap up the summer, on Aug. 19 the youth will have a picnic
and will then be recognized at the Mid-Missouri Mavericks game against
Springfield.
