Columbia-area youth told to 'Take Action' during
summer	(COLUMBIA, MO) - June means hot days, ice cream trucks,
swimming pools and summer vacation. The lazy days of summer are here for
young people throughout Columbia. Or are they?
"Volunteers are a valuable asset to our local government,"
said Leigh Nutter, volunteer coordinator with the Office of Volunteer
Services. "By sharing their time, they make the city of Columbia more
efficient. These same volunteers learn new skills, make new friends and
learn more about how our local government functions."
Youth volunteers are no exception. Youth volunteers provide
valuable services to Columbia and other non-profit agencies by doing
such things as sorting food at the Central Missouri Food Pantry, mowing
lawns for the elderly building sets for the TRYPS Children's Theater.
Not only is volunteering a great way to help the community, it is an
excellent way to learn new skills and meet new and interesting people.
Young people can take action this summer in one of two ways. The
Youth in Action Program offers a number of organized and supervised
volunteer activities throughout the summer for youth between the ages of
12-15 years. Participants will do everything from working at the food
bank, to serving Lunch in the Park, to rolling around in the mud at
Mudstock, while learning the importance of civic duty and having fun.
The Office of Volunteer Services will host two information
sessions on this program: Thursday, May 27 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., and
Tuesday, June 2, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Both will be held in an
"open house" fashion at City Hall, 701 East Broadway.
All youth can use the Summer Youth Volunteering Directory to
find opportunities in the area. This directory offers information on
youth volunteer opportunities from over 30 local organizations. These
are available at the city's Office of Volunteer Services, the
Voluntary Action Center or on the Web at www.GoColumbiaMo.com on the
Volunteer Services page.
For more information regarding the Summer Youth Directory or
Youth in Action, contact Anne Meysenburg at 999-0474 or
OVSINTER at GoColumbiaMo.com.
