Tenth Annual 'Use Less Stuff
Day'
(COLUMBIA, MO) - On Nov. 18, the Columbia Public Works Volunteer
Program will celebrate the beginning of the tenth annual Use Less Stuff
Holiday Campaign. The date, the Thursday before Thanksgiving, is
significant because it marks the beginning of the high-waste holiday
season.
Each year during the five weeks between Thanksgiving and New
Year?'s Day, Americans generate about 25 million tons of trash. That
amounts to an extra million tons per week, compared to any other
five-week period.
The primary goal of Use Less Stuff Day is to establish the
importance of source reduction in addressing the problem of the
nation?'s waste. Recycling gets a lot of attention, and yet, as
important as it is, it is not as important as using less stuff. If we
are to significantly reduce pollution and waste, we must emphasize
source reduction. And everyone, in some small way, needs to do his or
her part.
The Local Campaign
In preparation for the holiday season, the Public Works
Volunteer Program will issue a free Holiday Waste Prevention Guide. The
media and the public both enjoyed and profited from the tips of the last
few years, and they are always interested in consumer-friendly ways to
source reduce.
Reducing waste, in addition to helping the environment, can also
be rewarding to you financially. If you use less stuff, you? will save
money every time you shop. Your community will also save money since the
cost of preventing waste is zero, while the cost of recycling -- not to
mention landfilling - can be very expensive. Prevention can mean more
money for services like education, crime prevention, road maintenance
and human services.

Volunteer Program Assistant Christine Gardener at (573) 874-6271.
