Parks & Recreation holiday events
COLUMBIA, MO (November 22, 2004) -- 

Annual Kwanza Celebration & Expo
Saturday, Dec. 4, 2 p.m. - 5 p.m., Douglass High School Gym
Free and open to the public. Community awards at 3 p.m. followed by the
Kwanza Feast. African attire recommended. Sponsored by Parks &
Recreation, Columbia Housing Authority, Fun City Academy and the
Frederic Douglass Coalition. Call 874-6379 for more information. 

Christmas at Maplewood
Sunday, Dec. 5, 1 p.m. - 4 p.m., Nifong Park 
The Walter's Boone County Historical Museum and the Columbia Parks &
Recreation Department invite you to celebrate "Christmas Past" at
the historical Maplewood Home. Guides dressed in 19th century attire
will escort guests through decorated halls sharing the memoirs of Dr.
Frank Nifong and Mrs. Lavinia Lenoir Nifong. Delightful memories,
entertainment and holiday refreshments promise to make this a Christmas
to remember. For more information and to make your reservation, please

Santa Hotline
Saturday, Dec. 11
Children between the ages of 3-10 can call the North Pole from 8 a.m.
to 7 p.m. Children can talk to Santa, Mrs. Claus or one the many elves
and personally give them their Christmas lists. Call one of the

2004 Holiday Lighting Contest
Registration deadline - Friday, Dec. 17
Judging - Dec. 18-20
It's time to begin thinking about decorating your home for the
Holiday season! Once you have completed your decorating, you have one
thing left to do - enter the 2004 Holiday Lighting Contest. The contest
is open to all Columbia residents. Prizes are awarded based on
originality, artistic quality, use of material, creative use of space,
and aesthetics. Since entry is FREE, everyone should have fun entering.
To enter, call 874-7460. Reminder, 2003 winners are not eligible to
enter this year's contest, but are more than welcome to enter in
2005.

Holiday Lights and Sights Tours
Wednesday, Dec. 22, 6:15 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. or 7:45 p.m. - 9 p.m.
$5 for adults, $3 for children 12-under 
Tour Columbia's best decorated yards and neighborhoods from the
comfort of Parks and Recreation's mini busses. Tours begin at the ARC.
Pre-registration required.
