Water and Light Century Celebration
(COLUMBIA, MO) - Columbia Water & Light will celebrate its
100-year anniversary of being a municipally owned utility on Saturday,
Oct. 9, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Electric Distribution, 1514 East
Business Loop 70. Along with historical displays and conservation
information, there will be fun activities for children and adults. Large
equipment will be on display, including the COLT train. Rides will be
offered in bucket trucks and kids can climb on a miniature pole climbing
setup. The event will serve as a way for Columbians to get to know their
friends and neighbors who operate the locally owned utility.
The first week of October is Public Power week, which is an
opportunity for utilities across the United States to celebrate the
benefits of municipal ownership. In 1904, Columbia voters decided to
form a municipal utility in order to ensure public control of the city's
water and power supplies. Public control, it was felt, would guarantee
quality electricity and clean water, while keeping rates low. Today,
Columbia Water and Light has not only met these goals but has been able
to reinvest money into the community.
For more information about the history of Columbia Water and
Light, pick up a publication in the lobby of City Hall or call (573)
874-7325 to have one mailed. There is also a video airing on the
Columbia Channel at 7 a.m., 11a.m., 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. each day, until
Oct. 15. The Columbia Channel, the city of Columbia's government
access channel, broadcasts on Mediacom channel 13 and Charter
Communications channel 2.
