Donation opportunities now available at Stephens Lake Park

COLUMBIA, MO (October 8, 2004) -- Because of the distinctive features
at Stephens Lake Park and its prominence in the community, Parks &
Recreation is offering many unique possibilities for donations.

Stephens Lake Park is a 110-acre park located near the center of
Columbia, complete with a swimming and fishing lake, picnic shelters,
playgrounds, boardwalk, climate-controlled indoor shelter, hard surface
trails and arboretum.

"Because of the expected high demand for placing benches in Stephens
Lake Park, a bench location plan has been devised," explains Mike
Griggs, park services manager, Parks & Recreation. "Benches will be
placed according to the plan."

According to Griggs, five metal benches are available for donation
around the perimeter walk of Stephens Lake. These black metal benches
are similar to those in Flat Branch Park and will carry a metal plaque
with the donor's name. The cost of donating a metal bench is $2,000.

Standard park benches are also available for donation. Thirteen of
these benches will be located along the perimeter trail. Other benches,
as determined by the Parks and Recreation Department, will be available
at other locations, such as playgrounds. These benches are similar to
the benches found in other Columbia parks and trails. The cost of a
standard park bench is $500.

Individuals or groups may also donate single trees at Stephens lake
Park. The cost of the tree program is $250 per tree. This includes the
tree, plaque and continued maintenance of the tree. After the tree is
planted, the donor will receive a certificate and map of the planting
location for each tree.

Selection of tree species and locations will be chosen by the Parks and
Recreation National Resources staff in cooperation with the individuals
or group donating the tree to ensure this gift will be a long lasting
tribute or memorial.

"One of the more unique features of Stephens Lake Park is the plan
for an arboretum," said Griggs. "The long-range master plan includes
tree collections throughout the Stephens Lake Park, primarily
concentrated on the eastern side. The opportunity exists to donate
complete collections."

Stephens Lake Park has additional donation opportunities. High profile
items include:

Waterfalls
Reservable climate-controlled indoor shelter
Island
Boardwalk
Amphitheater
Sprayground play area
Single picnic table shelters
Proposed fitness stations

The bench location plan and bench and tree donation forms are available
online at www.GoColumbiaMo.com (GoWord:GoStephensLake). Brochures are
available at the Parks & Recreation office at 1 S. 7th Street and at the
Parks Management Center at 1507 Business Loop 70W. Contact the Parks and
Recreation Department at (573) 874-7201 for more information regarding
these unique donation opportunities.
