FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: Raymond A. Beck, City Manager - (573) 874-6338
City receives deed to 77.79 acres of Philips property
COLUMBIA, MO (October 13, 2004) -- The city of Columbia received the
deed to 77.79 acres of the Philips property as the first tract of land
to come under control of the city as part of a planned future regional
park.
The purchase price is $1,244,640 or $16,000 per acre. The money for the
purchase came from the parks sales tax approved by voters and funds set
aside with earnings from a previous parks ballot issue, also approved by
voters.
"The mayor and City Council have been very supportive of land banking
property for the future development of this regional park," said
Raymond A. Beck, city manager. "The city thanks the Sapp family for
working with the city to assist in making this land available for public
use."
"As a part of the overall regional park plan, a second tract of land,
52.9 acres, includes the lake and a buffer area around it, which is in
accordance with previous Council action, and will be deeded to the city
at no cost after lake improvements are completed. I have discussed with
the owner and developer the possibility of making the lake available for
public use as soon as possible."
"The third part of the overall regional park plan involves purchase
of the Crane property, which is immediately across Gans Road. The city
is continuing to work toward the purchase of the Crane property and has
had discussions with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources about
how an overall state and city parks system can be coordinated with
trails and buffer land to Gans Creek and other communities."
