Report confirms Columbia's high quality water

(COLUMBIA, MO) - During May, Columbia Water and Light customers
will receive a Water Quality Report with their utility bills. As
required by the Environmental Protection Agency's Safe Drinking Water
Act, the report outlines the source of Columbia's water and any trace
substances that were found in measurable quantities in Columbia's
water. Of the 83 regulated substances Columbia's water is tested for,
traces of only seven substances were found. All of these substances were
well below allowable levels set by the Environmental Protection Agency.
Columbia's water comes from 13 wells in the McBaine area near
the Missouri River. This groundwater is naturally filtered through a bed
of sand and gravel before it is pumped from the wells to the McBaine
Water Treatment Plant. After the water has gone through aeration,
softening and filtration at the plant, it is pumped to the West Ash and
South Pump stations and then to the consumers. In over three decades of
water testing at the McBaine Water Treatment Plant, no violation of
federal standards has occurred.
Any person who does not directly receive a bill can pick up a
copy of the Water Quality Report from the lobby of City Hall at 701 E.
Broadway or the Utility Customer Service Office. Those with Web access
can download a copy at www.GoColumbiaMo.com. Customers can have a report
mailed to them by calling Columbia Water and Light at 874-7325. A
complete list of all the water testing results for the Columbia system
is also available.
