Intentionally set fire destroys out building

COLUMBIA, MO (August 10, 2005) -- The Columbia Fire Departments
responded to a report of a fire near the corner of Mills Drive and
Tremont in southwest Columbia at 9:55 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 10.
Firefighters arrived to find a 20x30 out building fully involved in
fire. Firefighters used two aerial towers and several hand lines to
extinguish the fire and subsequent natural cover fires sparked by the
building fire. The fire was under control in less then 20 minutes. 

Fire investigators found that the out building and property were owned
by a local investment group. About 30 tires were stored in the lower
level of the structure, but the building had not been used for some
time. The building was slated for demolition for future development.
There were no utilities to the building and unintentional causes were
ruled out. The structure and contents are a total loss. Damage is
estimated at $20-30,000.

Neighbors have observed juveniles playing in and around the structure
on numerous occasions.

Fire investigators have ruled the fire as incendiary in nature.
Columbia Police are assisting the Columbia Fire Marshal's Division with
the investigation.
