Columbia Transit celebrates 40-year anniversary

(COLUMBIA, MO) - Columbia Transit will mark its 40th anniversary
the week of Sept. 19, 2005. The city began providing commuter service to
citizens on Monday, Sept. 20, 1965. To celebrate the benchmark, Columbia
Transit has planned a number of events for that week, plus an episode of
City Scope and a display of photographs and memorabilia highlighting the
city bus service's history:
EVENTS
1. Free Ride Day - Thursday, Sept. 22. Passengers travel for free all
day on all Columbia Transit vehicles. This is a great opportunity for
new riders to try transit. This event is coupled with:
2. Families Ride - Parents can introduce their children to public
transit on the way to the Twilight Festival, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
on Thursday evening, Sept. 22. The first 30 children on the Orbiter
Route during that time will receive Columbia Transit goodie bags. As
usual, on Thursday nights two Downtown Orbiters will be circling the
festival, departing Wabash Station every 15 minutes.
3. Red Cross Blood Drive - Columbia Transit will sponsor a blood
drive Friday, Sept. 23, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., at the Columbia/Boone County
Health Department on Worley. Donors will receive T-shirts and cookies
and juice.
4. Take the Bus to Market Day - Saturday, Sept. 24, 10 a.m. - noon.
The Columbia Farmers' Market is sandwiched between two Columbia
Transit bus routes - the Red traveling down Ash Street and the Green
driving down Worley Street. Shoppers can take the bus to the market and
take home as many as three bags filled with crisp, fresh, locally-grown
produce. On Saturday, Columbia Transit will have a table at the market
to answer questions and give out promotional items, bus schedules and
bus information. The first 25 patrons to stop by the booth will receive
a free Columbia Transit tote bag to help carry their purchases.

Learn the history of Columbia Transit:
1. The Columbia Channel will include a story on Columbia Transit in
its October episode of City Scope. The show will feature interviews with
administrators, drivers and passengers, and archival photos.
2. A historical display in the lobby of the Daniel Boone building will
include reproductions of photos and articles from the Columbia Daily
Tribune and Columbia Missourian (used with permission), reproductions of
post cards and photos from the State Historical Society and memorabilia
from Columbia Transit employees. The display will open the week of Sept.
19 and continue through mid-November.
