Festival of the Arts Commemorative Poster unveiled
COLUMBIA, MO (August 29, 2005) -- Scott Myers' photograph titled
"Sycamore" has been chosen as the Commemorative Poster for the 2005
Columbia Festival of the Arts.
The work was selected from 108 images submitted by 19 Missouri artists
through a jury process. "Sycamore" was shot with a high resolution
digital camera, which Myers prefers because it allows him to maintain a
very open and spontaneous shooting style, as well as an extremely high
level of detail in the finished work. The final image is printed with
Epson Ultrachrome inks on PremierArt Water Resistant canvas.
Myers captured the photograph in the late morning in August of 2004
while walking his dog, Bohdi, at Three Creeks Conservation Area. Myers
described the moment saying: "We stopped at the deep hole where Bass
and Turkey Creeks meet so Bodhi could swim. I picked a large leaf off a
young Sycamore tree, held it to the sky with one hand and shot a photo.
I dropped the leaf and we moved on. The whole process took 15 seconds,
at the most."
Myers' work with the image prior to printing was simple as well,
involving little more than cropping the image into a square format.
Myers remarks that it rare for one of his images to come together "so
completely and quickly." Adding that Sycamore is one of his favorite
photographs "because it is a reminder of what can happen when all the
elements flow together and the process of making art is effortless."
Myers, a native Missourian, holds an undergraduate degree in art and a
masters in art history and archaeology from the University of Missouri.
Myers resides in Columbia and works as a photographer for Missouri's
Department of Natural Resources.
The 2005 Commemorative Poster, "Sycamore", can be purchased at Deck the
Walls in the Columbia Mall, at the city's Office of Cultural Affairs, 13
N. 8th Street, or at the Columbia Festival of the Arts, to be held Sept.
24-25 on Courthouse Square in downtown Columbia.
