City begins posting Columbia Channel videos online
COLUMBIA, MO (December 29, 2005) -- Videos about the city of
Columbia's services and programs will now be available on the
Internet in a pilot project. The City Council requested that videos
produced for broadcast on The Columbia Channel, the government access
channel on cable television, be made available to a wider audience. The
city of Columbia has started loading videos online through a free
service to evaluate the public's interest.
The videos can be accessed on the city's Web site,
www.GoColumbiaMo.com. Select the link under announcements on the main
page.
After researching alternatives for posting Columbia Channel broadcasts
online, staff determined that the best solution was to use a free online
video service provided by Google. This service will allow the city to
provide video without using city bandwidth and disk space. Staff time
for producing and publishing videos are the only resources expended at
this time. Staff will track usage statistics and continue to monitor the
service to determine how it can be improved.
To keep download times manageable, it was decided to offer only short
videos that are produced by the Columbia Channel staff. Public meetings
that are broadcasted on the station are not offered at this time due to
the length of the programs.
Meetings will be held before the next budget year for the E-Government
coordinator, Information Services and the Columbia Channel to report to
the City Council if there are equipment needs to further expand the
Columbia Channel presence on the Web.
The Columbia Channel broadcasts on MediaCom channel 13 and Charter
Communications channel 2.
The city of Columbia encourages people to comment on this new service
by sending an e-mail to TCCmail at GoColumbiaMo.com or by calling 874-7325
