Cleanup Columbia will be held April 9
(COLUMBIA, MO) - Cleanup Columbia 2005 is scheduled to take
place Saturday, April 9. The city of Columbia invites families,
businesses, churches, clubs, and individuals to participate in this
city-wide litter pickup event. Each year Columbia volunteers help
improve our community.
Cleanup Columbia began in 1997 and has involved more than 1,000
volunteers annually picking up litter at over 100 locations around
Columbia. Last year alone, Cleanup Columbia pulled in over 1,100
volunteers, who picked up 1,210 bags of trash.
Cleanup Columbia starts with volunteers picking up litter
throughout the morning of April 9 followed by lunch at Twin Lakes
Recreation Area. The city of Columbia provides volunteers with trash
bags, gloves and safety vests. The event is sponsored by the Columbia
Daily Tribune, 102.3 BXR, KOMU TV 8, APAC-Missouri Division, Atkins and
CenturyTel.
This year's event has partnered with the "Bike, Walk &
Wheel: A Way of Life in Columbia" project to promote the benefits of
physical activity during Cleanup Columbia. Walking and picking up trash
is a great way to get some physical activity into your day. So, get out,
get active & spruce up your city!
In addition to volunteering for this event, the city of Columbia
is also asking for the public's help in identifying locations that
need to be picked up. Citizens can report littered streets by completing
an online form at www.GoColumbiaMo.com.
Please register with the Office of Volunteer Services no later
than Friday, April 1, to participate. You can do so by calling 874-7499
or registering online at: www.GoColumbiaMo.com/Volunteer.
