Public art proposal on view
COLUMBIA, MO (January 11, 2005) -- The proposal for artwork at Stephens
Lake Park is currently on view in the lobby of City Hall, 701 E.
Broadway. A comment box is available. The display will be up through
Jan. 28.
The city's Standing Committee on Public Art selected artist Carol
Fleming Marks to create site-specific public art for Stephens Lake Park
as part of the Percent for Art program. Ms. Marks' proposal includes
two concepts for consideration. Both incorporate 12 elements and are to
be made of ceramics.
In a statement about her proposals, Marks says that she hopes her work
will "distill the qualities of nature and culture into one essence"
and adds that, when installed, her work will "invite park users into
the relationship between sculpture and its natural setting."
In February, the city's Standing Committee on Public Art will review
the two proposals as will the Commission on Cultural Affairs. Final
approval of a design concept will be determined by City Council.
The public art project at Stephens Lake Park is part of Percent for
Art, a program of the Office of Cultural Affairs which was established
by City Council in May 1997. It allows for one-percent of costs of
eligible city new and renovation construction projects be set aside for
site-specific artwork.
