Painting for Urban Walking Trail in First Ward begins Monday
(COLUMBIA, MO) - Painting of the city's first Urban Walking
Trail, to be located in the First Ward, begins Monday, July 25. The
Douglass Neighborhood Trail is exactly one mile long and follows
sidewalks along Ash, Garth, Worley and Providence Roads.
The PedNet Coalition's Active Living by Design program, the city's
CARE Gallery program and Public Works Department are working together on
this project. PedNet and CARE are jointly purchasing the paint from the
city, and the Public Works Department is donating 10 marker posts with
signs, which will be installed by PedNet volunteers in October.
Eric Repice, an artist identified by the CARE program, will work with
approximately twelve 14-18 year-olds on the design of "footprints",
along with the actual painting. The group will meet Monday, July 25, at
9 a.m. at St. Luke's United Methodist Church located at 204 East Ash
to begin the painting project.
Inactivity-related diseases such as diabetes and heart disease can be
positively affected by including more physical activity into daily
living. Community leaders Almeta Crayton and Wynna-Faye Elbert are
helping promote the Douglass Neighborhood Trail and a related program
that will challenge individuals to walk certain distances over a period
of time.
After the posts are installed in October, there will be a public
ceremony to officially open the trail.
PedNet's Active Living By Design project seeks to increase physical
activity among Columbia residents through programming and by addressing
environmental and policy barriers to physical activity.
