City of Columbia, Voluntary Action Center to give away computers
through its 'Homes For Computers' Program

COLUMBIA, MO (May 17, 2005) -- The city of Columbia, through the
Voluntary Action Center (VAC), will give away surplus (used) computers
and peripheral equipment (monitors, keyboards, mouse pointers, etc.) to
eligible VAC clients as part of the "Homes For Computers Program."
Forty (40) computers will be given away by drawing to clients who are
enrolled in VAC programs or programs/services administered by VAC. The
give-away will take place at 5 p.m. today, May 17, and again on Tuesday,
May 24, at the Sanford-Kimpton Building, 1005 West Worley.

Recipients will receive a short introductory computer course sponsored
by the Columbia Parks & Recreation Department before leaving with the
computer system.

The Homes for Computers program was approved by City Council at the
Dec. 15, 2003, meeting, and it targets families who have children who do
not have access to a computer in the home. Donation of these computers
to residents of the city of Columbia with disabilities, families with
at-risk students, and economically disadvantaged persons was determined
to be a higher and better use for these surplus computers than the prior
practice of selling them at auction.
