Disaster recovery center assists 140 Katrina evacuees
(COLUMBIA, MO) - As of Sunday evening, the disaster recovery
center (DRC) activated Friday has assisted 140 individuals who evacuated
the areas affected by Hurricane Katrina. The DRC is being hosted at the
Boone County Community Partnership office, Parkade Center, 601 Bus. Loop
70 W, Suite 217 C, on the north side of the building. The hours of
operation are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week.
The Boone County Chapter of the American Red Cross and the
Salvation Army are active participants within the DRC. The Boone County
Community Partnership office is assisting in coordinating the efforts of
the represented organizations. Boone County Red Cross reports to have
helped 329 individuals, the Salvation Army has helped 79 individuals and
the Voluntary Action Center has helped approximately 100 people.
The mission of the DRC is "to coordinate a single effort,
avoid duplicity and provide the best and most comprehensive service
available to all displaced persons who have relocated to our area."
The DRC offers an opportunity for evacuees to receive a variety of
services at one location. Services provided include food vouchers,
housing options, employment opportunities, access to transportation,
clothing and health referrals/counseling. Assistance not being met can
be provided by other social service organizations and Trinity
Ministries.
