Full slate of entertainment planned at 28th Annual Heritage Festival
COLUMBIA, MO (September 13, 2005) -- A wide range of entertainment will
be featured on three stages at the 28th Annual Heritage Festival and
Craft Show this weekend. The two-day event, coordinated by the Columbia
Parks and Recreation Department, will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on
Sept. 17-18 at historic Nifong Park.
Special Heritage Festival performers include:
Chris Camp "World Champion Whip Cracker and Entertainer" - For more
than 20 years, Chris Camp has performed all over the U.S. From "fast
draw" multiple cracking to precision tricks, Chris and his bullwhips
amaze audiences of all ages. He recently received a first-place in
double whip cracking for a world champion title. He has the Guinness
Book Record for 212 whip cracks in one second. Chris is scheduled to
appear on "The Tonight Show" Sept. 15.
He will perform at the Heritage Festival from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on
Sept. 17 on the Maplewood Barn Theater Stage. He will perform from 11:30
a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Sept. 18, also at the Maplewood Barn Stage.
The Lakota Pow Wow Dancers - This Native American dance group is from
the Oglala Sioux Tribe in South Dakota. The group delivers powerful
performances of their traditional dances. The dancers perform in
authentic clothing reproductions (circa 1860) and the dances are exactly
the way their forefathers did them. Not many dance groups keep as close
to their historical performances as the Lakotas. After their
performance, they will be in the traditional area sharing information
about their culture.
The Lakotas will perform on the Maplewood Stage from 11:30 a.m. to
12:30 p.m. on Sept. 17 and from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 18.
Kunama (African dance and storytelling) - Kunama is a featured
performer at the National Storytelling Festival. He will tell stories in
African costume, play instruments and dance. His performance will take
place from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 18 on the Maplewood Barn Stage.
Professor Farquar's Great American Medicine Show - Don't miss the
medicine show with amazing demonstrations of sharpshooting, illusion,
science, chicanery, psychic forecasting and good old-fashioned
flim-flam.
Professor Farquar will give four performances at the Heritage Festival:
12 to 1 p.m. on Sept. 17 on the Museum Stage; 2:45 to 3:45 p.m. on Sept.
17 on the Main Stage; and 12 to 1 p.m. and 3 to 4 p.m. on Sept. 18 on
the Museum Stage.
Other entertainment includes cowboy poetry and music, a fiddlers'
competition, Paul & Win Grace, Ironweed Bluegrass Band, the Community
Band and many more local favorites.
Besides great entertainment, other features of the Heritage Festival
will include a replica Lewis and Clark camp, an 1859 town with more than
30 shopkeepers' tents, American Indian drumming and dancing, and
artisans and tradesmen dressed in 19th century attire demonstrating
their trades and selling their wares.
The Heritage Festival is coordinated and sponsored by Columbia Parks
and Recreation and co-sponsored by ABC-17, Boone County Historical
Society, Columbia Convention & Visitors Bureau Tourism Development Fund,
Columbia Daily Tribune, Courtyard by Marriott, Metro Rotary Club &
Missouri River Community Network.
