CONTACT: Leigh Nutter
Volunteer Coordinator
(573) 874-7504

Workshop on disaster preparedness will be held Sept. 28

(COLUMBIA, MO) - "Disaster Awareness: Seniors Can Help Prepare" will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 28, from 9-11 a.m. at the ARC, 1701 West Ash. The free workshop, sponsored by several community organizations with a disaster and volunteer mission, will discuss how to prepare for a disaster and ways that citizens can volunteer to prepare or recover from disaster.
"We know that there are many citizens, particularly seniors, who are interested in lending a hand after a disaster, but may not know how to get involved," said Leigh Nutter, volunteer coordinator for the city of Columbia. "The workshop was planned in advance of Hurricane Katrina, but recent events have made this topic even more important."
	Participants will learn:
	* ways you can volunteer if disaster strikes Boone County
	* how you can get involved with additional training as a disaster volunteer
	* how to prepare for a disaster, including creating your own emergency kit
	* how a Volunteer Reception Center will operate following a disaster
	* the role of the Medical Reserve Corps in our community
	* what local government and nonprofit agencies are doing to prepare for disaster
Presenters include staff from the Columbia/Boone County Office of Emergency Management, the Columbia/Boone County Health Department, the Boone County Chapter of the American Red Cross, the local Salvation Army and the Voluntary Action Center.
Reservations requested by contacting the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) at 442-7238 or bcca05 at coin.org. The program is focused on seniors, but the public is welcome to attend and the information should be helpful to anyone.
