Columbia Transit's Wheels on the Bus Expedition/Contest & 'Your
Bike is Your Ticket' during Bike, Walk & Wheel Week

(COLUMBIA, MO) - Your bike is your ticket on city buses during
Bike, Walk & Wheel Week. This year, Columbia Transit is expanding its
participation in Bike, Walk & Wheel Week with its Wheels on the Bus
Expedition/Contest.
As in past years, passengers transporting their bikes on
Columbia Transit's bike racks ride for free. The offer is Columbia
Transit's way of inviting bicyclists to try out the bike racks
available on all city buses.
New this year is the Wheels on the Bus Expedition/Contest. The
contest runs throughout Bike, Walk & Wheel Week and is open to anyone
combining bike, wheelchair, skateboard or skates transportation with bus
travel. Contestants work out their own routes and mode of travel.
Adventurous travelers can take their main mode of transportation on the
bus and get off at random - a little like throwing a dart at a map and
beginning their trip where it lands.
Contestants have all week to travel. They do not have to take
their entire trip at one time, although there is a category for that
(most consecutive miles logged). They
can take their trip in sections, but they must document their route. In
the
Circumnavigation and Most Circuitous Route categories, the route has
to be continuous, although the trip doesn't.
Winning categories are: most miles logged on bike and bus; most
miles logged on wheelchair and bus; most consecutive miles logged on
wheels and bus (the trip done as one continuous effort); most circuitous
route (route must be continuous); circumnavigate the city by wheels and
bus (route must be continuous); most parks visited; most "artistic"
route and best "Wheels on the Bus" story.
Contestants who attend the Bike, Walk & Wheel Week kickoff event
at Flat Branch Park on Saturday, May 6, from 1-5 p.m. will receive
packets - while supplies last - including Columbia Transit route maps,
Columbia Parks and Recreation pamphlets showing city trails and parks
and a brochure of major public artworks from Columbia's Office of
Cultural Affairs. Contestants must submit documentation of their trips
to the judges by noon Saturday, May 13. Prizes will be awarded at the
closing event for Bike, Walk & Wheel Week at Twin Lakes Park from 2-4
p.m. Winners' routes, notes and photos will be posted on the PedNet
Web site: www.PedNet.org.
There is no charge to enter the contest, but participants not
using a bicycle will have to pay 50 cents full-fare or 25 cents
half-fare to ride the bus. Full contest rules and fare information are
available at www.GoColumbiaMo.com (GoWord:GoWheels) or by calling the
friendly Columbia Transit staff at (573) 874-7282.
Participants riding bicycles can take advantage of Your Bike is
Your Ticket. Bikes with wheels 16-inch or larger may use the bike racks.
Each Columbia Transit bus holds two bikes on a first-come first-served
basis. Folding bikes may be taken aboard the bus. Bikers nervous about
using the racks for the first time can ask their driver for help or view
the Bike 'n Bus instructions - complete with pictures - at
www.GoColumbiaMo.com (GoWord:GoBikeandBus).
