10th annual Cleanup Columbia has more than 1,300 participants
(COLUMBIA, MO) - The city's Office of Volunteer Services
estimates that 1,310 volunteers from 125 groups participated in the 10th
annual Cleanup Columbia on Saturday, April 8. Volunteers picked up 1,516
bags of trash and gave 2,280 hours of service. Over 500 volunteers
attended the post-cleanup barbecue at Twin Lakes Recreation Area
Saturday.
Estimates for the results of the event are based on reports from
41 of the 133 groups who pre-registered. Figures for the event will be
updated as other groups report their activity.
Cleanup Columbia 2005 had the most participation in the history
of the event with 1,645 volunteers picking up litter at 170 locations.
Cleanup Columbia is sponsored by APAC-Missouri Inc., CenturyTel,
The Sierra Club, the Columbia Daily Tribune, 102.3 BXR, KOMU TV 8 and
the WB 5. The Golden K Kiwanis Club and Columbia Public Works play
important roles in the logistics of the event.
