Arbor Day tree giveaway will be held Saturday
(COLUMBIA, MO) - City of Columbia TreeKeeper volunteers will
honor National Arbor Day with a tree giveaway this Saturday, April 29.
Seven hundred trees will be given away beginning at 9 a.m. at the north
parking lot of Bass Pro, 3100 Vandiver Dr.
TreeKeeper volunteers will be on hand to distribute the trees to
the public and answer any tree questions. Six species of trees will be
available, including flowering dogwood, pin oak, redbud, white ash and
white pine.
TreeKeeper volunteers participate in a six-week course on tree
identification, planting, pruning and other management topics and are
then asked to volunteer on tree projects in Columbia's city parks and
along trails and right-of-way. In 2005, 54 TreeKeepers gave 978 hours of
service to the city valued at more than $17,000.
The next TreeKeepers class will begin on Jan. 9, 2007. To find
out more about the tree giveaway or volunteering with the city of
Columbia, please call the Office of Volunteer Services at 874-7499.
