Festival of the Arts Commemorative Poster unveiled
COLUMBIA, MO (August 21, 2006) -- Steve Wrights photograph titled
"Summer Storm" has been chosen as the Commemorative Poster for the 2006
Columbia Festival of the Arts. The work was selected from 256 images
submitted by 34 Missouri artists through a jury process.
"Summer Storm," a large format landscape photograph, was shot in the
early summer of 1999, in Johnson County, Mo., as Wright traveled through
the area on a work-related trip. The image captured shows a squall line
of intense thunderstorms as they approached the Warrensburg area, just
over a field. While Wright shot the original photograph in color, he
later reproduced it in black and white. The black and white version was
selected for the Commemorative Poster.
Wright states that he normally plans each photograph carefully and
ahead of time, but that "Summer Storm" was a one-time opportunity
because of the fast-moving storm. Prior to being selected for the
citys Commemorative Poster, the color version of the "Summer
Storm" photograph was an award winner at the Missouri Arts Councils
Missouri 50 statewide visual art competition.
Wright lives in Columbia with his wife Deborah and their two daughters.
He received both his undergraduate degree in journalism and law degree
from the University of Missouri-Columbia. Wright is a practicing lawyer
and represents school districts throughout the state. His career in
photography started in the early 1990's with 35mm work published in
calendars and postcards, then progressed to medium and large format
works.
The 2006 Commemorative Poster, "Summer Storm", can be purchased at Deck
the Walls in the Columbia Mall, at the citys Office of Cultural
Affairs, 13 N. 8th Street, or at the Columbia Festival of the Arts, to
be held Sept. 23-24 on Courthouse Square in downtown Columbia.
The Columbia Festival of the Arts is a program of the City of Columbia
Office of Cultural Affairs. Financial assistance for this project has
been provided by Barnes & Noble Booksellers, Boone County National Bank,
The Callaway Bank, CenturyTel, Columbia Daily Tribune, Columbia
Convention Visitors Bureau, Commerce Bank, Dave Griggs Flooring
