Columbia Transit sponsors ‘Communities in Motion Day’ to celebrate
the benefits of public transportation

(COLUMBIA, MO) - Columbia Transit announced today that all
passengers will ride for no charge on Thursday, Sept. 7, as part of
“Communities in Motion Day.”
Families headed out to enjoy the first evening of The
District’s September Twilight Festival are invited to avoid the
traffic and ride Columbia Transit buses downtown. Children riding the
Downtown Orbiter with their parents during the festival will receive
goodie bags.
Columbia Transit will join with other systems throughout the
country to educate, promote and celebrate the benefits of public
transportation. “Communities in Motion Day” is sponsored by the
American Public Transportation Association (APTA).
“’Communities in Motion Day’ showcases the importance of
public transportation for people from all walks of life. For many people
it is literally a lifeline to their schools, jobs, doctors and
communities,” said William W. Millar, president of APTA.
“Public transportation benefits not only those who use it; it
benefits all citizens of our community by spurring economic development,
reducing congestion and fostering more livable communities,” said Ken
Koopmans, transportation manager for the city of Columbia. “It is the
fabric that connects our community.”
In addition to the free bus rides, Columbia Transit will offer
other activities and incentives in honor of “Communities in Motion
Day.” They include:
*	Free transportation to the Twilight Festival on Columbia Transit
routes
*	A Columbia Transit booth at the Twilight Festival
*	A Red Cross Blood Drive from 2-6 p.m. behind Wabash Station
*	“Families Ride” on the Downtown Orbiter from 5:30-8:30 p.m.
