Start the new year without the flu
(COLUMBIA, MO) - The Columbia-Boone County Health Department
wants to remind residents that the largest number of flu cases is
typically seen during January and February. The best way to prevent
having the flu is to get a flu vaccination every year. This vaccination
offers protection within two weeks of receiving the shot and lasts for
approximately 90 days. Getting a flu shot now will still protect you
during the peak part of the flu season. Other important preventative
measures include washing hands frequently, staying home from school or
work when sick, and avoiding touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
Physicians offices, labs, clinics and hospitals in Boone
County have reported approximately 50 cases of influenza diagnosed from
rapid flu tests. The flu can lead to complications, most likely in young
children, the elderly or anyone with chronic medical problems.
Complications from the flu can result in hospitalization due to
secondary bacterial and viral infections including pneumonia. The
Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services reported that during
the week ending Dec. 9, 2006, there were 60 deaths (during that week) in
Missouri involving pneumonia and influenza.
The Columbia-Boone County Health Department is currently
offering flu shots on a walk-in basis, Monday-Friday 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
The cost for flu shots is $10. Medicaid, Medicare, cash and check
payment are accepted. FluMist? (intranasal flu vaccine) is also
available in limited supply for a cost of $10.
The Columbia-Boone County Health Department is located at 1005
W. Worley St. For 24-hour flu vaccine information, please call
573-874-7355 and select option 9. Residents may also call 573-874-7356
during regular business hours. Detailed flu information may be viewed on
the Web at www.cdc.gov/flu.
