Midday fire interrupts downtown traffic
COLUMBIA, MO (December 28, 2006) -- On Dec. 28 at 1:58 p.m., units of
the Columbia Fire Department were dispatched to 22 North 10th St., the
home of Parker Funeral Service. The caller advised that during
crematorium operations a small amount of fire escaped from the
equipment.
Firefighters found that some ignitable liquids from the crematorium
were on fire on the concrete floor in front of the equipment.
Crematorium operators had placed a dike around the liquids and they were
contained in a small area.
Firefighters assisted in extinguishing the small amount of fire and
assisted in ventilating some smoke from inside the building.
At no time was the structure in danger from the small amount of fire.
Employees trained in the operation of the crematorium and in the use of
fire extinguishers were on site. Operations at the crematorium continued
as scheduled.
Traffic at the busy corner of 10th and Walnut was tied up for about 30
minutes while crews were on standby and ventilated the building. There
were no injuries reported during the incident.
