Commercial structure fire at 1416 West Worley Street

COLUMBIA, MO (February 21, 2006) -- On Monday, Feb. 20, at 11:49 a.m.,
units of the Columbia Fire Department responded to a report of a
commercial structure fire at 1416 West Worley St. 

The first unit arrived on the scene within three minutes and reported
nothing showing. However, when firefighters opened the front door, they
encountered heavy smoke and moderate heat. Firefighters acted quickly in
extinguishing a fire in a bath and laundry room located in the master
bedroom. The two occupants who were home when the fire started safely
evacuated the residence, as did the neighbors living in the adjoining
unit.

Fire investigators on the scene pinpointed the origin of the fire to
the bath/laundry room located in the master bedroom. Further
investigation revealed the cause to be an unattended child playing with
a cigarette lighter and fireworks inside of the residence. The child
caught papers on fire that were laying on top of clothing in a basket in
the laundry room. 

Initial damage estimates to the structure and its contents are
approximately $70,000.
