Residential structure fire at 306 North 9th Street

COLUMBIA, MO (January 16, 2006) -- On Monday, Jan. 16, at 8:28 p.m.
units of the Columbia Fire Department were dispatched to 306 North 9th
for a reported residential structure fire. Firefighters encountered
smoke on 9th Street while responding to the home and encountered heavy
smoke coming from the front of the residence.

Firefighters were met by the occupants upon arrival and were directed
to the rear bedroom. Once inside, fire crews encountered heavy smoke
conditions making their way to the rear of the home where the fire was
found and extinguished.

Fire investigators on the scene determined the cause of the fire to be
combustibles stored too close to a water heater. Initial damage
estimates to the structure and its contents are approximately $90,000.
Four occupants escaped the home. There were no injuries.
