Community Circles, 'Let's Talk, Columbia!' 2006
(COLUMBIA, MO) - The Human Rights Commission announces three upcoming events: two Community Circles and "Let's Talk, Columbia!" 2006.
Two special Community Circles have been coordinated in recognition of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday and to cultivate racial understanding and healing in our community. Both are free. No registration is required.
* First Ward Dialogue, Impulse For Action: Monday, Jan. 23, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Columbia/Boone County Health Department Community Room, 1005 W. Worley - Join fellow citizens, including Councilwoman Almeta Crayton and other First Ward leaders and residents, for this Community Circle. It will be an opportunity for safe, guided sharing of personal perspectives and experiences by each participant regarding living and working in the First Ward, and about being a part of the larger community.
* "RACE - The Power of an Illusion, Episode Three: The House We Live In" - Tuesday, Jan. 24, from 6 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. in the Columbia Public Library Friends Room - View the award-winning video which reveals how races resides not in nature, but in politics, economics and culture, and how our social institutions "make" race. The video will be followed by facilitated, candid, "circle" dialogue on the difficult topic of race in Columbia.
The "Let's Talk, Columbia!" 2006 registration deadline has been extended to Jan. 27. Since 2001, more than 500 people have come together for barrier-breaking dialogue and study circles sponsored by the city.
* "Let's Talk, Columbia!" 2006 - Saturday, Feb. 11, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. continuing Sunday, Feb. 12, from 1:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. - People from all backgrounds are needed for this weekend of citizens engaging in straight talk about hard issues on diversity in our community. Participants celebrate and explore community through intentional listening and candid sharing of personal perspectives and life experiences.
There is no cost but space is limited. Register online at www.GoColumbiaMo.com or call (573) 874-7488 (V/TTY) for a registration brochure.
