Summer food program helps feed local children when school is out
(COLUMBIA, MO) - The summer months may provide lots of free time
for school children, but they can also create a problem for kids who
rely on the school cafeteria for free or reduced price meals. Hundreds
of local community organizations across Missouri provide lunch to
eligible children through the Missouri Department of Health and Senior
Services Summer Food Program.
In Columbia, the program is known as Lunch In The Park.
Free lunch is served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on weekdays to eligible
children under the age of 18. The program is available from June 12 -
Aug. 18 and takes place in Douglass Park, located at 400 North
Providence Road. All meals meet the USDA nutrition standards required
for school lunches.
On average, more than 100 children are served each day at Lunch
In The Park.
Lunch is provided and served by organizations including the
Columbia/Boone County Health Department, the Voluntary Action Center and
Columbia Public Schools. These organizations also work to provide
educational activities for the participants in the program each day.
For more information about the Summer Food Program, call the
Columbia/Boone County Health Department at (573) 874-7683 or log on to
www.dhss.mo.gov.
