Nonmotorized Transportation Committee bike ride

COLUMBIA, MO (July 13, 2006) -- The Nonmotorized Transportation Pilot
Program Advisory Committee is planning a bike ride to four southwest
Columbia intersections on Sunday, July 16, beginning at 9 a.m. at the
Village at Cherry Hill (south of Chapel Hill Road and east of Scott
Boulevard). This is the second of three rides.

Intersections to be visited are: Scott Boulevard and Gillespie Bridge
Road, Providence and Green Meadows, Providence and Stadium, and Stadium
and Forum Boulevard.

The purpose of the ride is to discuss possible recommendations for
improvements for nonmotorized transportation such as bikers, walkers and
wheel chair users.

Columbia was selected, along with three other communities, to
participate in a pilot program “ . . . to determine the extent to
which bicycling and walking can carry a significant part of the
transportation load and represent a major portion of the transportation
solution.” Each participating community will receive an approximately
$22 million federal grant over a four-year period.

Mayor Darwin Hindman previously appointed a 35-member advisory
committee to assist the city in developing a plan for building a
nonmotorized transportation system.

Members of the public are invited to attend. It is strongly recommended
that participants wear helmets.

For more information or requests for special accommodations, please
contact committee member Trevor Harris at 442-7872.

If you would like to learn more about the project, please go to the
city’s Web site, www.GoColumbiaMo.com and enter GoWord
“GoNonmotorized” in the GoWord search box.
