Boards and commissions applications are available
COLUMBIA, MO (June 23, 2006) -- The Columbia city clerk is accepting
applications for boards and commissions. Applications must be received
by the clerk's office, 701 E. Broadway, 4th Floor, by noon on Friday,
July 7. Applications are available at the clerk's office or may be
found on the city's Web site at www.GoColumbiaMo.com on the City
Council page. The following are current boards and commissions
openings:
The Board of Adjustment has one vacancy for an alternate member (to
serve in the absence of a regular member) with the term to expire Nov.
1, 2010. Members are responsible for hearing and deciding appeals where
it is alleged there is an error in any order, requirement, decision or
determination made by an administrative official in the enforcement of
zoning, planning and subdividing ordinances. The member must be a city
resident. Monthly meetings are held the second Tuesday at 7 p.m.
The Bicycle/Pedestrian Commission has four vacancies with terms to
expire July 31, 2009. One member shall have knowledge of street
construction and maintenance and three shall have knowledge of
bicycling, bicycle safety or bikeways. All must be qualified voters. The
board advises the Council on issues relating to sidewalks, walkways and
trails. Monthly meetings are held on the third Wednesday at 7 p.m.
The Building Construction Codes Commission has eight vacancies. Three
regular members, with terms expiring Aug. 1, 2009, are needed in the
following categories: major contractor or superintendent; minor
contractor or home builder; and licensed electrician or electrical
contractor. Five alternate members (to serve in the absence of the
regular member) are needed in the following categories: residential
rental property owner (term to expire Aug. 1, 2007); minor contractor or
home builder (term to expire Aug. 1, 2009); major contractor or
superintendent (term to expire Aug. 1, 2009); licensed electrician or
electrical contractor (term to expire Aug. 1, 2009); and person
experienced in fire prevention (term to expire Aug. 1, 2008). The
commission periodically reviews and makes recommendations relating to
building construction codes. Monthly meetings are held the fourth Monday
at 4:30 p.m.
The Community Services Advisory Commission has one vacancy with the
term to expire Dec. 31, 2007. The member must be a qualified voter and
resident of the city. Members shall not serve on the board of directors
or be employed by any agency which applies for funding through the
commission or which receives funding upon recommendation of the
commission. The commission advises the city and county in all matters
regarding the planning and contracting for human service programs to
adequately meet the needs of the citizens. Monthly meetings are held the
third Tuesday at 7 p.m.
The Disabilities Commission has one vacancy with the term to expire
June 15, 2009. The member shall own or operate businesses within the
Columbia area and must be a resident of the city of Columbia. The
commission considers concerns relating to residents with disabilities.
Monthly meetings are held the second Thursday at 3 p.m.
The Board of Electrical Examiners has two vacancies with terms to
expire Aug. 1, 2009. One member must be a registered professional
engineer and one must be a layperson. The board is empowered to give
examinations for electricians' licenses and certificates. Meetings are
held on call.
The Historic Preservation Commission has one vacancy with the term to
expire Sept. 1, 2007. The member must have a background and expertise as
a real estate investor. This commission makes recommendations to Council
regarding historically significant structures. Monthly meetings are held
the first Tuesday at 7 p.m.
The Mayor's Committee on Physical Fitness has three vacancies to be
appointed by the mayor. The committee shall educate the public about the
importance of regular physical fitness activity and promote, initiate
and encourage local physical fitness and sports programs in the
community. Monthly meetings are held the second Monday at 12:30 p.m.
The Board of Mechanical Examiners has two vacancies with terms to
expire June 17, 2009. One member shall be a registered professional
engineer and one shall be a mechanical heating, ventilation, air
conditioning and refrigeration contractor or master mechanic. The board
is empowered to give examinations for mechanical heating, ventilation,
air conditioning and refrigeration licenses and certificates. Meetings
are held on call.
The Parks & Recreation Commission has two vacancies. One member must be
a registered, qualified voter of Ward 1 (term to expire May 31, 2009)
and the other can be from any ward, but must be a registered, qualified
voter of the city (term to expire May 31, 2008). The commission acts in
an advisory capacity in all matters pertaining to public recreation.
Monthly meetings are held the third Thursday at 7 p.m.
The Board of Plumbing Examiners has one vacancy with the term to expire
May 31, 2008. The member shall be a journeyman plumber and a registered,
qualified voter. The board establishes standards and procedures for the
qualification, examination and licensing of master, journeyman,
residential and apprentice plumbers and issues certificates of
competency, as appropriate. Monthly meetings are held the last Tuesday
at 5 p.m.
The Special Business District Board of Directors has one vacancy with
the term to expire Jan. 1, 2008. The member shall be an owner of real
property within the District, a resident of the District or person who
owns, manages, operates or is employed by a business located in the
Columbia Special Business District. This board makes recommendations to
the Council regarding the Special Business District. Monthly meetings
are held the second Tuesday at 4 p.m.
