'LET"S TALK COLUMBIA!: TEEN SPEAK'
Social Justice Yesterday, Today and Hope for Tomorrow
Tuesday, June 27
5:45 p.m. - 8:45 p.m.
Columbia Public Library Friends Room
"LET'S TALK, COLUMBIA!" is an opportunity for citizen involvement
in dialogues on diversity. The program is sponsored by the Commission on
Human Rights. The Commission's goal is that through personal
interaction, understanding is fostered and relationships are
strengthened, creating a greater community-wide appreciation for human
diversity.
"TEEN SPEAK!" was first promoted as the topic of a monthly Community
Circle in June 2004. This initiative resulted from the high level of
interest and enthusiasm of several students who participated in a study
circle at Hickman High School and then received study circle facilitator
training during the 2003-2004 school year.
Listening to the personal experiences, perspectives and insights shared
by students in the study circle, it was clearly important to give a
place to the voices of our teens in a broader community setting. The
involvement in planning and outreach for community dialogue extended
beyond Hickman High School students that first year, and continued in
2005.
Since the Community Study Circle program's inception in June 2000,
more than 530 persons throughout our community have participated in
study circles on diversity, race and community.
