Late evening fire damages southwest Columbia home

COLUMBIA, MO (April 29, 2006) -- Columbia firefighters responded to a
report of a house fire at 1311 St. Andrews at 8:41 p.m. on Friday, April
28. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered fire and smoke pouring from
the garage and roof area of the single story home.

Columbia firefighters extinguished the fire but not before extensive
damage occurred to the garage area and part of the roof. Fire spread to
the attic and firefighters battled to make access and extinguish the
fire there.

The home is owned by Zach and Havan Rodeman who were home at the time
of the fire with their two children. The Rodemans' son went into the
kitchen for a snack and told his parents that there was smoke in the
kitchen. Zach Rodeman investigated and saw light smoke which intensified
quickly. Rodeman alerted the other family members, exited the home, and
by the time they were across the street, Rodeman reported flames were
coming from the front of the home. There were no injuries to the Rodeman
family or firefighters.

Fire investigators were called to the scene and determined the origin
of the fire was in or near a small storage area between the attached
garage and the house. The cause of the fire is undetermined and remains
under investigation.

Damage was estimated to the building and contents at $150,000. The
Rodeman family will stay with relatives until they can return to the
house.

It is unknown at the time of this release what role smoke alarms played
in the notification of fire and smoke to the family.
