Boards and commissions applications are available
(COLUMBIA, MO) - The Columbia city clerk is accepting applications for boards and commissions. Applications must be received by the clerk's office, 701 E. Broadway, 4th Floor, by noon on Friday, June 2. Applications are available at the clerk's office or may be found on the city's Web site at www.GoColumbiaMo.com on the City Council page. The following are current boards and commissions openings:
* The Board of Adjustment has two vacancies - one for a regular member to expire May 1, 2010 and one for an alternate member (who will serve in the absence of a regular member) to expire Nov. 1, 2007. Members are responsible for hearing and deciding appeals where it is alleged there is an error in any order, requirement, decision or determination made by an administrative official in the enforcement of zoning, planning and subdividing ordinances. Members must be city residents. Monthly meetings are held the second Tuesday at 7 p.m.
* The Building Construction Codes Commission has two vacancies for alternate members with one term (fire prevention) to expire Aug. 1, 2008 and one term (landlord) to expire Aug. 1, 2007. Alternate members serve in the absence of regular members. The commission periodically reviews and makes recommendations relating to building construction codes. Monthly meetings are the fourth Monday at 4:30 p.m.
* The Cultural Affairs Standing Committee has one vacancy with the term to expire July 1, 2009. This member must be an artist. The committee aids in the Percent For Art Program in order to commission art for placement throughout the city. Meetings are held on call.
* The Disabilities Commission has one vacancy with the term to expire June 15, 2009. The member shall own or operate businesses within the Columbia area and must be a resident of the city of Columbia. The commission considers concerns relating to residents with disabilities. Monthly meetings are held the second Thursday at 3 p.m.
* The Historic Preservation Commission has one vacancy with the term to expire Sept. 1, 2007. The member must have a background and expertise as a real estate investor. This commission makes recommendations to Council regarding historically significant structures. Monthly meetings are held the first Tuesday at 7 p.m.
* The Library Board of Trustees has three vacancies to be appointed by the mayor with terms to expire June 30, 2009. Members must reside within the Library District and shall hold no other office or position in city government. Duties include appointing the librarian and overseeing expenditures of library fund monies. Monthly meetings are held the first Thursday after the first Tuesday.
* The Board of Mechanical Examiners has two vacancies with terms to expire June 17, 2009. One member shall be a registered professional engineer and one shall be a mechanical heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration contractor or master mechanic. The board is empowered to give examinations for mechanical heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration licenses and certificates. Meetings are on call.
* The Board of Plumbing Examiners has one vacancy with the term to expire May 31, 2008. The member shall be a journeyman plumber and a registered, qualified voter. The board establishes standards and procedures for the qualification, examination and licensing of master, journeyman, residential and apprentice plumbers and issues certificates of competency, as appropriate. Monthly meetings are held the last Tuesday at 5 p.m.
* The Railroad Advisory Board has three vacancies with terms to expire July 15, 2010. Members shall have knowledge and interest in either railroad, shipping, transportation or business and shall be sympathetic with the principle of municipal ownership and operation of branch line railroads. One member must represent a business or firm that routinely ships or receives goods or raw materials over said branch line. Monthly meetings are held the second Thursday at 7:30 a.m.
* The Special Business District Board of Directors has one vacancy with the term to expire Jan. 1, 2008. The member shall be an owner of real property within the District, a resident of the District or person who owns, manages, operates or is employed by a business located in the Columbia Special Business District. This board makes recommendations to the Council regarding the Special Business District. Monthly meetings are held the second Tuesday at 4 p.m.
* The Substance Abuse Advisory Commission has one vacancy with the term to expire Oct. 31, 2007. The member must have demonstrated an interest in and concern for substance and alcohol abuse problems in the community. The commission promotes coordination of programs intended to prevent and eliminate alcohol and substance abuse. Monthly meetings are held the second Wednesday at 12 p.m.
* The Water & Light Advisory Board has one vacancy with term to expire June 30, 2010. The member shall be a qualified voter and a resident of the city at least one year prior to appointment. The member shall be sympathetic with the principle of municipal operation of the water and light system. The board serves in an advisory capacity. Monthly meetings are held the first Thursday at 7 a.m.
