Submarine crew members visit; public reception planned

COLUMBIA, MO (May 25, 2006) -- Three crew members from Columbia's
namesake submarine, USS Columbia, will begin a visit of Columbia
tomorrow. USS Columbia's home port is Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
Activities will begin with a reception at 5 p.m. on Friday, May 26, at
Boone Tavern and Restaurant, 811 E. Walnut. Members of the public are
invited to stop by and tell them how much you appreciate what they are
doing in service to the United States of America.

The crew members will be in town to participate in some of the Memorial
Day weekend activities. Visiting crew members are Lieutenant (junior
grade) Blake Wawrzenski, Fire Control Technician First Class Kendall
Phillips and Machinists Mate Second Class William Cox. Phillips is the
submarine's Sailor of the Year and Cox is the Junior Sailor of the
Year.

They will attend the Honored Guests and Volunteers Banquet Saturday
night; attend the air show on Sunday; participate in the Memorial Day
parade on Monday morning as guests of the Muddy MO Chapter of the World
War II Submarine Veteran's Association; and will lay a wreath at the
County Court House on Monday morning.

The visit is sponsored by the Columbia Submarine Committee that is
chaired by Anne Moore, D&M Sound. The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 280
Ladies Auxiliary provided financial resources to help defray visit
costs.

USS Columbia was christened in September 1994 and commissioned in
October 1995 in Groton, Connecticut, and has namesake cities in
Missouri, Illinois and South Carolina. The submarine was built by
General Dynamics.
