Two firefighters retire as new recruits begin careers
COLUMBIA, MO (May 31, 2006) -- Captain Mark Brunstrom and Lieutenant
H.P. "Rusty" Bradley both retire June 2 after 20 plus years of service
to the citizens of Columbia. These two veteran firefighters leave as six
new recruits begin their careers with the Fire Department.
Captain Brunstrom, hired March 4, 1985, retires after having worked as
a firefighter, engineer, lieutenant and captain. Brunstrom has served as
a pension board member, a step-up battalion chief, and he has been
responsible for the fire hose used by the department. His
responsibilities included writing specifications, testing and
distributing fire hose and creating a data base that tracks these
activities. Brunstrom has been described by his supervisors as a 'team
player,' organized, and self-motivated. Brunstrom has also served on a
committee to hire new firefighters. In the beginning of his career, he
stated that one of his goals was to "work to build trust and confidence
in his abilities with the other members of the department."
Lieutenant Bradley was hired as a firefighter Sept. 17, 1984.
Lieutenant Bradley also served in the positions of firefighter and
engineer before becoming a lieutenant. Lieutenant Rusty Bradley is a
21-year veteran of the Columbia Fire Department and a 15-plus year
instructor at Missouri Fire Rescue Training Institute (MFRTI). In
September 2005, at the Missouri Emergency Services Instructors
Conference in Jefferson City, Lt. Bradley was named the 2004-2005
Instructor of the Year. His supervisors consider him a good leader and a
positive role model. Bradley has worked extensively on updating fire
department map books and has been instrumental in developing past Fire
Department public relations campaigns involving his alter-ego 'Cinder
Sam.'
Lt. Bradley has also instructed many new Fire Department recruits in
live-burn scenarios involving liquid petroleum tanks. During retirement,
"Rusty" plans to work on his skills as a fisherman and a grandfather.
Please join the Columbia Fire Department, City Manager Bill Watkins,
and other distinguished guests as we wish these two retirees good luck
in their future endeavors. Cake and refreshments will be served at Fire
Station #1 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, June 2.
