Chimney fire causes family and friends to evacuate home

COLUMBIA, MO (November 20, 2006) -- Columbia firefighters responded to a report of a residential structure fire at 1811 Rose Dr. on Nov. 19 at 12:40 p.m. Initial reports indicated a fire behind the wall and above the fire place in the residence. 

Arriving fire crews found smoke coming from the eves near the chimney on the west side of the residence. Columbia fire apparatus consisting of three engines, one ladder, one rescue squad, a foam truck and two chief officers arrived on the scene to extinguish the fire. Crews we able to finish extinguishment and check the attic for fire extension. 

Originally the family of the residence was entertaining guests after church when someone noticed that the wall above the fireplace was turning dark and was hot to touch. The homeowners, with the help of others, attempted to put out the fire with extinguishers and a garden hose while the Fire Department was being called.

Fire investigators on the scene determined to cause of the fire to be a chimney fire, which can be caused by a chimney that needs to be cleaned or the burning of “unseasoned wood.” Initial estimated dollar loss for damages to the structure and its contents were $15, 000.

There were no injuries to any of the family members or the guests at this incident.
