COLUMBIA, MO (October 10, 2006) -- The Columbia/Boone County Health Department (CBCHD) will hold two clinics in the upcoming weeks to begin vaccinating the community against the seasonal influenza virus. Important Flu Vaccine Information
Vaccine for children under the age of 4 years
Due to restrictions placed by the vaccine manufacturer in the ordering process, the CBCHD was NOT able to secure vaccine in doses appropriate for children under the age of 4 years old. Parents are encouraged to check with their pediatrician or other flu shot providers for vaccine availability. If the CBCHD is able to obtain a supply of vaccine suitable for children under the age of 4 years old, we will notify the public as soon as possible.
Prices for 2006-2007 flu season services
The CBCHD accepts Medicaid, Medicare, cash and check payments. We are unable to bill private insurance.
Flu shots: $20
Pneumonia shots: $25
Flu Mist (intranasal spray): $20
*Note: FluMist is only approved for individuals between the ages of 5-49 years old, without underlying medical conditions or chronic illnesses.
DO NOT get the flu vaccine if any of the following apply:
* You have a serious allergic reaction to eggs.
* You have had a serious allergic reaction to a previous dose of the flu vaccine.
* You have a history of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (a paralyzing illness).
* You have a fever or moderate to severe illness on the day you are getting the vaccine.
Good health habits are also an important way to help prevent the flu:
* Avoid close contact.
Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.
* Stay home when you are sick.
If possible, stay home from work, school and errands when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness.
* Cover your mouth and nose.
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick.
* Clean your hands.
Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs.
* Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose or mouth.
