Ray Beck receives Distinguished Service Award from Missouri Municipal League
COLUMBIA, MO (October 12, 2006) -- Raymond A. Beck, retired Columbia city manager, received the Missouri Municipal Leagues Distinguished Service Award during the Leagues annual meeting on Oct. 2 at the Renaissance Grand Hotel in St. Louis.
The prestigious Distinguished Service Award is bestowed upon a current or former League member for outstanding service, leadership and dedication to the Missouri Municipal League. The selection was made by a five-member committee comprised of the League president and vice president, the executive director and two board members appointed by the League president. Consideration is given to length of service, enthusiasm and dedication, participation in League activities, and outstanding leadership to the association.
It was a great honor to receive this award from the Missouri Municipal League, said Beck. Nearly all my professional career has been in public service in local government and I am pleased, personally, to receive this award from my peers. It represents the support of my family, city staff and, most importantly, the citizens of Columbia. It has been a high privilege to have served in municipal government and to have had a positive impact in the lives of so many people.
I tip my hat to Ray and to his wife, Dee, said City Manager Bill Watkins. Rays outstanding and dedicated service to Columbia and the Municipal League set him apart as a leader who made an impact on local government. He personifies public service, and I know the community joins me in offering congratulations on a remarkable career.
The award nomination cited Becks 46 years of service to the city of Columbia, including more than 20 years as city manager. Becks Municipal League service included five years as a member of the Board of Directors and service on the MML Nominating Committee and the Policy Committee for Natural and Urban Development
Becks League activities include publication of three articles: State Revolving Funds for Sewer Construction. (February 1988); Columbia: An Environmentally Progressive City, (February/March 1993); and Zipping Up Our Cities (1994).
Beck remains active in many professional and community organizations, many of which have honored him as a life member.
The Missouri Municipal League is an independent, statewide not-for-profit association. It was organized in 1934 and its aim has been to develop an agency for the cooperation of Missouri cities, towns and villages and to promote the interest, welfare and closer relations among them in order to improve municipal government and administration in the state. The basic goal is to strengthen cities through unity and cooperation.
Missouri Municipal League membership consists of elected municipal officials and appointed municipal officials.
