October is 'Let's Talk Month'
COLUMBIA, MO (October 18, 2006) -- Lets Talk Month is an opportunity for parents and children to communicate in an open and honest manner about sexuality and other sensitive issues. Such discussions can help delay sexual activity and avoid unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. Research shows that pre-teens and teens prefer their parents to be their sex educators.
Families play a vital role in helping young people make healthy decisions about sex. Most parents want the opportunity to share their values and provide their children with accurate information about sexuality. But often, parents and other adults feel uncomfortable discussing sexuality. Often they need assistance or support in starting meaningful conversations. An excellent Web site for more information is www.advocatesforyouth.org.
The Teen Pregnancy Prevention Coalition, along with the Columbia/Boone County Health Department, is sponsoring a workshop for parents in the Columbia area:
What: Lets Talk About Our Teens
When: Monday, Oct. 30, 6:30 - 8 p.m.
Where: ARC, 1701 W. Ash
Whos invited: Parents, grandparents, foster parents and other caregivers
The workshop will offer parents and other caregivers advice on communicating with young people about sex. Participants will have the opportunity to identify community resources, practice skills, learn about Internet safety and create a plan for starting conversations on sexuality with their children.
If you can not attend our Oct. 30 session, we will offer it again Dec. 5 from 6:30 - 8 p.m. at the ARC.
Contact Maureen Coy at 874-7559 for more information.
