Public art proposals on
view
(COLUMBIA, MO) - Proposals for artwork for the Wabash Station
renovation are on view in the lobby of City Hall, 701 E. Broadway. A
comment box is available. The display will be in City Hall through Sept.
29 after which it will be placed in the lobby of the Wabash Station.
The citys Standing Committee on Public Art selected artists
Don Asbee, of Hartsburg, and David Spear, of Columbia, to create
site-specific public art for the Wabash Station as part of the Percent
for Art program. The two artists are working independently. Asbees
proposal is for a steel sculpture to be placed outdoors, on the east
side of the building. Spear plans to create four paintings to be
installed indoors, above the original ticket windows on the south end of
the lobby.
Both artists are drawing on the history of the Station for their
subject matter. The Wabash first opened for passenger train service in
1910. At the time, it was considered one of the finest stations in the
area. The site was used until the late 1970s when rail traffic was
discontinued. For several years, the building remained empty. In 1982,
Columbias Transit System began using the station for city bus
services. Currently, more than 500,000 riders use city buses each year
with the Wabash Station functioning as the primary transfer point for
all bus and ParaTransit services.
Next month, the citys Standing Committee on Public Art will
review the proposals from Asbee and Spear for their Percent for Art
projects. The Committee will formulate a recommendation that will then
be forwarded to the Commission on Cultural Affairs. Final approval of
design concepts will be determined by City Council.
The Wabash Station public art project is part of Percent for
Art, a program established by City Council in May 1997. It allows for
one-percent of costs of eligible city new and renovation construction
projects be set aside for site-specific artwork.
Percent for Art is coordinated by the citys Office of
Cultural Affairs. For more information, call (573) 874-7512 or e-mail
