Festival features youth artwork on promotional materials
(COLUMBIA, MO) - The 15th annual Columbia Festival of the Arts
will bring performing, visual and literary artists to downtown Columbia
Sept. 23- 24.
Festival 2006 promotional items -- T-shirts, posters, flyers and
buttons -- will highlight the artwork of Columbia Public Schools student
Wei Xue, now a junior at Rock Bridge High School. Wei is the daughter
of Xiaoqin Jia and Jianhong Xue.
Wei created the image while a ninth grade student of Diane
Strotbeck at Jefferson Junior High School. When the artwork was created
the class had just learned how to enlarge images utilizing a grid
method. Wei decided to do a self portrait that looked like an infrared
picture of herself. I wanted to show others a different way of
looking at people, she states about her work.
The image was selected by the Office of Cultural Affairs from
the more than 80 submissions displayed in the 2005 Columbia Festival of
the Arts Youth Art Exhibit. Each year student artwork is featured in an
exhibit located in the lobby of the Boone County Government Center
during the Festival weekend and throughout October. Student artwork to
be featured in 2007 promotional materials will be selected from this
years exhibit.
The Festival is free and open to the public. It will be held at
the Boone County Courthouse Square and surrounding streets in downtown
Columbia Sept. 23- 24. Festival hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days.
