Abandoned house catches fire in central Columbia

COLUMBIA, MO (April 11, 2007) -- Around 3:40 p.m. today an abandoned
house on the northeast corner of Hickman Avenue and Providence Road was
reported on fire by a passerby. The caller stated that black smoke was
coming from the house located at 301 Hickman Ave.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy black smoke coming from the front
door and the rear of the house. Firefighters from two Quint trucks, one
Snozzle, one ladder truck and one squad company acted quickly to
extinguish the fire within 15 minutes.

During the fire, Providence Road was blocked off for over an hour in
the northbound lanes because of the hazard that rush hour traffic
presented to crews working the scene.

The origin and cause of the fire currently remain undetermined.
Investigators did, however, estimate the fire damage to the structure
and contents at $50,000.
