Quick action restores city utility services
COLUMBIA, MO (December 5, 2007) - Service has been restored to
residents affected by water and electric outages this morning, said John
Glascock, interim director of Columbia Water and Light. Early this
morning a failed protective device cut power to traffic lights, snarling
traffic flow. Three water main breaks interrupted service for about two
hours.
“Water and Light crews moved quickly to make sure everyone could move
safely and have reliable service to their homes and businesses,
“Glascock said. “Our response time was about two hours for all
the incidents.”
The electric outage started at 6:22 a.m., affecting customers along
Business Loop 70 from Charles Street to Sexton Road and along Providence
Road from Business Loop 70 to Broadway. It was caused by the failure of
a protective device to reset itself. Technicians identified and
corrected the problem.
Three water main breaks occurred about the same time. Two cast iron
mains (a six-inch main at Clinton Drive and Broadway and a four-inch
main at Providence Road just south of Broadway) failed due to dry soil
and ground movement. Water and Light staff are still determining the
cause of the break in an eight-inch PVC (polyvinyl chloride) main at
Bernadette and Stadium Boulevard.
Water and Light crews have repaired all breaks and restored all
services.
