Columbia named Missouri’s first ‘Creative Community’
(COLUMBIA, MO) - Mayor Darwin Hindman has proclaimed next week, Feb. 4 - 10, as “Creative Community Week” in Columbia in reference to Columbia being named Missouri’s first Creative Community by the Missouri Arts Council. The proclamation calls upon citizens to “celebrate the honor by continuing to support and enjoy the arts locally.”
The Creative Community award will be presented by Governor Matt Blunt as part of the annual Missouri Arts Awards being held Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2 p.m. in the rotunda of the State Capitol building in Jefferson City. The Missouri Arts Awards are a program of the Missouri Arts Council (MAC), a state agency. This is the first year that a Creative Community award is being given.
MAC’s guidelines for the award state that a recipient is chosen because of “long-lasting and profoundly positive contributions*to promote economic growth by using the arts industry of Missouri.” They further define that “growth of tourism” and the “impact on the cultural climate of the local community, region and state” are of primary consideration when selecting a community for the award.
Columbia’s nomination, submitted by the city’s Office of Cultural Affairs and Convention and Visitors Bureau, highlighted the active and diverse offerings of Columbia’s many arts organizations as well as the city’s leadership in the field by providing funding to local arts agencies and events, adopting a cultural plan and establishing a Percent for Art program.
In addition to the honor of being the first-named Creative Community in the state, street signs announcing the designation will be presented to Columbia.
