Science students stop heat loss with model homes

(Columbia, MO) -- Columbia junior high students will spend this Saturday morning building model homes to test the heat loss of different building materials. Columbia Water and Light has partnered with the Columbia Public Schools for the last 10 years to provide hands-on learning opportunities through the Saturday Science program. This year’s program includes a presentation on conduction, convection and radiation of energy. Students then use different building materials to build small-scale homes so they can measure the amount of heat loss. Basic weatherization techniques like caulking, weather stripping and adding insulation to stop air flow are also studied. The goal of the project is to demonstrate to students how science principles are used in business and everyday life.
