City of Columbia, Voluntary Action Center and Downtown Optimist announce 4th Annual 'Homes For Computers' Program
COLUMBIA, MO (February 7, 2007) -- The city of Columbia, the Voluntary Action Center and the Downtown Optimist Club are partnering again to provide used, surplus computers and equipment to eligible VAC clients. Approximately 40 computers and items such as monitors, keyboards and mouse devices will be donated to families who are enrolled in VAC programs or in services administered by that agency.
Applications are available at VAC offices, 800 N. Providence, Suite 220, and must be completed and turned in by Feb. 27. If there are more applications received than computers available, a drawing will be held at VAC offices.
Eligible applicants include those who:
* are now enrolled in a VAC program or a service administered by the agency;
* have at least one child enrolled in grades K-12 in Columbia Public Schools; and
* do not have computer in the home.
VAC staff will determine eligibility, date and verify the applications and enter them in the drawing. Winning clients will be notified no later than March 2.
Computers will be distributed to the winners on Saturday, March 10, from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m., at the Downtown Optimist Club, 1201 Grand Avenue.
The City Council created Homes for Computers in December 2003 as a more constructive alternative to disposing of them through the University of Missouris Surplus Property Division. To date, 118 computers have gone back into use in the community through this program.
